Blood Pressure Screening

What is a Blood Pressure Test?

A Blood Pressure Test measures the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps.

High blood pressure or hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Left untreated it can cause you to have a heart attack or debilitating stroke.

The only way to know if you have High Blood Pressure is to have your blood pressure tested.

Two numbers are used to measure the level of your blood pressure. One number records blood pressure when the pressure is at its highest i.e. as the heart muscle squeezes the blood out of your heart – this is called systolic pressure.  The other number is when your heart relaxes i.e. allows the blood to flow back into the heart – this is called diastolic pressure.

The normal level of blood pressure is usually about 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic).

How Does a Blood Pressure Test Work?

A Blood Pressure Test is a very quick and non-invasive proccess. In the privacy of a consultation room the Pharmacist will place a cuff around your upper arm.  The cuff will inflate and deflate and will measure the flow of blood. The Pharmacist will give you the results and discuss the next steps with you.  This might include diet and lifestyle advice, or a referral to your doctor.

It is important to have your Blood Pressure tested regularly as High Blood Pressure left untreated can cause silent damage to the blood vessels and the heart.

Speak to one of our Pharmacists today to have your routine Blood Pressure Tests and talk about any concerns you may have.
