What do you know about your Heart Health?

Up to 80% of the incidence of Heart Disease can be prevented through the adaption of risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking. Heart Disease develops in silence, over many years and is usually very advanced by the time people experience any symptoms.

More people die in Ireland every year from cardiovascular disease than any other disease. It accounts for 36% of all deaths and is a major cause of disability, representing a huge burden on our healthcare system

Make an appointment today to speak to one of our friendly Pharmacists who can advise your on the risk factors that affect your heart health, such as cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking.

BMI

When you call into our Molloys Lifestyle Pharmacy about your heart health our pharmacists can measure your Body mass Index. The BMI is a relatively straightforward and convenient way of assessing someone's weight.  The pharmacist will help you understand your BMI result,  If you are overweight they may discuss the best way to lose weight through a combination of diet and exercise.

Waist Size

Our pharmacist will also offer to measure your waist size. Measuring your waist is a good way to check you are not carrying too much fat around your stomach, which can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. This is helpful as you can have a healthy BMI and still have excess tummy fat, meaning you're still at risk of developing these conditions.

When measuring your waist,

  • We locate the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips,

  • Wrap a tape measure around your waist midway between these points

  • Ask you to breathe out naturally before taking the measurement.

Regardless of your height or BMI, you should try to lose weight if your waist is:

  • 94cm (37ins) or more for men

  • 80cm (31.5ins) or more for women

You're at very high risk and should contact a GP if your waist is:

  • 102cm (40ins) or more for men

  • 88cm (34ins) or more for women

The pharmacist will also offer to do a Blood Pressure Test, and if available a Cholesterol Test.
